FOR LIFE , KARIOBANGI , HURUMA & KOROGOCHO
Education for life program is a prevention program on H.I.V./AIDS through Education
, which was started in 1999 , managed under the auspices of Karibangi Catholic
Church.
OUR VISION
Fullness of life amidst and beyond H.I.V/AIDS.
OUR MISSION
Empowering young people with life – promoting values through education
inorder to help them make informed choices, within a society full of problems
such as; drugs, violence, broken families, HIV/AIDS amongst others.
OUR REACH – OUT AREAS
The program targets youths in and out of schools in Kariobangi, Huruma, Ngei
and Korogocho slum areas of Nairobi Eastlands. An area inhabited by approximately
300,000 – 8.50,000 people.
OUR PROGRAMS ( INTERVENTIONS)
a) Behavior formation program
The program target pupils in class 4, 5 and 6 , this enhances moulding of behavior
for the young pupils inorder to prevent them from indulging into irresponsible
behaviors.
b) Behavior change Process
The program target pupils in class 7 and 8 takes pupils through sessions of
behavious change inorder to equip them with life enhancing values, that will
help them in making right choices despite the challenges they face in the slums.
c)
Village Program
Targets youth out of school (class 8 leavers) who never manage to go to secondary
school. The program empowers them in life skills, career choice and human formation.
d)
Teachers program
The program targets teacher’s in the reach - out schools, takes them through
behavior change and facilitation skills on behaviors formation for pupils.
e)
Parents Program
The program targets parents, this is done during school open days, parenting
skills and communicative skills is offered, to enable them dialogue with their
children.
f)
Drugs Program
The program target school pupils and teenagers out of school enhances awareness
of drugs effects, identify abusers and assist them recover through rehabilitation.
g)
Youth Alive clubs
The program promotes creativity and unity amongst schools through exchange program
where pupils share different ideas and co-curricular activities.
h)
Screening and Treatment
The program promotes better heath of children in the slums by giving preventive
and curative care through referrals. Health education to teachers is also offered.
LESSONS
LEARNT
a) HIV/AIDS problem cannot be tackled using only technical methods, values (education)
are very essential for prevention to infection.
b) Focusing on a particular geographical area in the prevention of HIV/AIDS
facilitates in - depth coverage.
c) Formation of teachers and parents is important for the play significant roles
in the lives of young people.
d) Follow- up for career guidance on vocational course is very important for
class 8 leavers.
RECOMMENDATIONS
a) Promotion of self – reliance among young people through the spirit
of hardwork, discipline and incorporating life promoting values.
b) Establishment of parenting formation programs in religious circles and schools
to form young people for future role of parenting.
c) Support of human formation programs in all societal set-ups to enhance responsibilities
amongst people.
